Deadly Winter Storm

A gigantic and deadly winter storm is spreading across the US Midwest, with freezing rain and heavy snow causing road and air transport a chaos.

The worst part of the storm is expected to hit on Thursday and drop up to 2ft (61 cm) of snow by Christmas Day.

The icy roads were blamed because of the deaths of 12 motorists, but mostly in Nebraska, Kansas and Arizona.
There were also 100 flights leaving Minneapolis that were canceled because of the snow and the icy roads.

The national weather service (NWS) had publish blizzard warnings early on Thursday for Kansas and parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska and the Texas panhandle. They had said, "There's just a gigantic storm that is moving across the centre of the country , basically from the Canadian border to Texas and is spreading from west Colorado to Illinois . They also had recommended some things the people could do.

Also the freezing rain and high winds were making driving extremely dangerous. The latest storm began in the south-west on Tuesday, causing blizzard-like conditions and travel chaos, before spreading to the east and north.

South of the storm system, heavy thunderstorms will produce flooding across Texas and into the Ohio Valley, forecasters warned.
Flights at Chicago's two main airports were running on schedule, officials said, after the storm forced the cancellation of more than 260 flights on Wednesday.

What we think as a group about this new is that is very bad that the storm had caused many deaths and that a lot of flights were canceled. But is very nice to have snow at that time because it will make Christmas a beautiful time.

"More than 100 icebergs that were first spotted off the coast of Macquarie Island, an Australian territory around 900 miles south east of Tasmania, are now thought to be only 200 miles away from New Zealand's south coast.

In the Mediterranean, Killer Tsunamis From an Ancient Eruption

The massive eruption of Thera volcano in the Aegean Sea more than 3,000 years ago produced killer waves that raced across hundreds of miles of the Eastern Mediterranean to inundate the area that is now Israel and probably other coastal sites, a team of scientists has found.
The team , writing in the October issue of Geology , said that they have discovered that the new evidence suggested that giant tsunamis from the harmful eruption had hit the “coastal sites across the Eastern Mediterranean littoral.” Crete, Cyprus, Egypt, Phoenicia and Turkey had lived in that region .
For decades, scholars have suggested that the giant eruption, just 70 miles from Crete, might have brought about the mysterious collapse of Minoan civilization at the peak of its glory. The remnants of Thera’s eruption today make up a circular archipelago of volcanic Greek isles known as Santorini.

Thera is thought to have erupted between 1630 and 1550 B.C., or the Late Bronze Age, a time when many human cultures made tools and weapons of bronze. Scholars say the tsunamis and dense clouds of volcanic ash from the eruption had cultural repercussions that rippled across the Eastern Mediterranean for decades, even centuries. The fall of Minoan civilization is usually dated to around 1450 B.C. Geologists judge the eruption as far more violent than the 1883 eruption of the volcanic island of Krakatoa in Indonesia, which killed more than 36,000.

Today, on CNN, there was news that NASA had launched the new Ares I-X rocket. They had tried to launch it before but the weather was not good so they had to postpone the launch until today at 11:30 ET. One of the main purposes of the lauch is to try out 3 massive parachutes that will be part of the deceleration system of the shuttle. This means that when the two parts of the shuttle separate, parachutes will extend and that the motor will slowly and softly fall into the ocean.

This rocket which still doesn´t have a name, is part of a program that has been working on new vehicles that will take the place of the shuttles that NASA uses because the shuttles are outdated. It is called the Constellation Program.

If everything goes well, the Orion capsule which goes at the top of the Ares rocket, won´t be able to take any austronauts until five years from now, in 2015. So, the USA won´t be able to send people up into space for those five years.

This launch was really important because right now, President Obama is looking for money for NASA because they don´t have enough money for their investigations.
